DEVELOPMENT::
The organizers set a budget of Tk 1,40,00,000 for the Twenty20 tournament and so far received confirmation of Tk 70 lakh from the sponsors.
Preparations for the PCL (Port City League), set to be kicked off on May 2, stepped up further ON APRIL 19 with the signing of title sponsor agreement with a prominent business group.
Habib Group came forward to buy the title sponsorship in exchange of Tk 20 lakh.
Besides Habib Group and Taher Group, who agreed to give Tk 10 lakh, there are many sponsors like Inter Sports, Meridian Hotel, Asian SR Hotel, UCBL, Karnaphuli Guest House and Chittagong Club who all have come forward with medium amounts.
A list of 48 players to be auctioned in five different categories was announced with Tigers opener Tamim Iqbal and left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak in the A+ grade with a floor price of Tk 30,000.
Players like national opener Imrul Kayes, Zunaed Siddiqui, Mehrab Hossain, Rokibul Hasan, Shahadat Hossain, Syed Rasel, Nazmul Hossain Mahbubul Alam, Rubel Hossain, Mahmudullah Riyad and Nayeem Islam have been placed in A grade with the floor price of Tk 20,000.

The auction will be held at the Karnaphuli Resort on April 25 and the bidding opens at 11:00am.
The agreement signing ceremony of the title sponsorship took place at the office of Chittagong Divisional Krira Sangstha (CDKS) yesterday in presence of a large number of sports organisers, government officials, media people and some other PCL sponsors.
Chittagong Divisional Commissioner and CDKS president MAN Siddique, Deputy Commissioner Fariduddin Ahmed Chowdhury and Habib Group director Salman Habib signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides.
"The list of sponsors will hopefully get large in next few days and different companies have already shown keen interest in the tournament," said CDKS vice-president Ali Abbas.
Chittagong Mohammedan, Chittagong Abahani, Chittagong Brothers Union, Ispahani Group, Continental Group, Noakhali Top Sports and Laxmipur Dhaka Sports have already confirmed their participation. Another team from Dhaka might fill up the other spot in the eight-team competition.
Considering the acute power crisis, most of the matches of the eight-day tournament would be held in daytime while four matches -- the opening game, two semifinals and the final -- and the opening ceremony may be played under lights at the Chittagong MA Aziz Stadium.
The four day-night matches will be telecast live by private satellite channel ATN Bangla.
Organisers said the champions would get a prize money of Tk 15 lakh while the runners-up will receive Tk 5 lakh. The man-of-the-match will get an attractive amount.
Some foreign players are expected to add to the glamour and Chittagong Mohammedan Sporting Club have already confirmed at least two Pakistani cricketers Kamran Hossain of Habib Bank and Kaiser Abbas of Sialkot Club.
Each team will be allowed to include three foreign cricketers.

Sakib al Hasan, the number one all-rounder in the ICC one-day ranking, missed the list as he failed to recover from a pelvic injury that kept him out of action for more than a month.
A total of 13 players have been put in the A category while another 18 players were included into A- category. Four and 11 players have been bracketed in the B+ and B category respectively.
A player in A+ will get a minimum wage of Tk 30,000 for each match while the minimum wages for the A, A-, B+ and B categories have been fixed at Tk, 20,000, Tk 15,000, Tk 10,000 and Tk 8,000 respectively.

::: PCL ::: PORT CITY LEAGUE ~~ GEAR UP BANGLADESHI CRICKET TO FUTURE GLORY Top Sports of Noakhali pushed Chittagong Mohammedan Sporting Club to the backseat in the opening match of the country's first-ever Twenty20 tournament as the Port-city Cricket League (PCL) 2009 got off to a boisterous start at the MA Aziz Stadium yesterday.
Top Sports, batting first, raced to 158 for the loss of four wickets in the allotted 20 overs and then bowled their more colourful opponents out for 125 in 18.3 overs for an easy 33-run victory.
The defeat meant Mohammedan would now need to come back strongly against Chittagong Brothers Union tomorrow and Abahani on May 7 in their last two league matches to remain in the title race.
None of the around 10,000-strong crowd however would argue with the fact that Top Sports were by far the better team, thanks to superb batting display by opener Nazmus Sadat and three fine bowling spells by Elias Sunny and Sri Lankan recruits S Lokuarachchi and K Weeraratna.
The big Top Sports total was built around Sadat's, who boasts a price tag of 60,000 taka, 91 not out off 57 balls and Mahmudullah Riyad's run-a-ball 30 on a perfect batting wicket.
In reply, the local Mohammedans never looked easy except the first over of which came 14 runs and were eventually bundled out for 125 with nine balls to spare. Their Pakistani player Qaiser Abbas played his part with a fine knock of 53 from 34 balls with six fours and two sixes, but he received little support from the other end.
Sadat brilliantly exploited the meek attack of MSC comprised of skipper Tarek Aziz, Pakistani brothers Qaiser and Nayyar Abbas, Hafirzur Rahman Hira, Sanyamul Islam and Sajidul Islam.
Along with experienced captain Sanwar Hossain (19 runs off 16 balls), Sadat put up 42 runs for the first wicket in only four overs and at the halfway Top Sports were 75 for 3. They slowed down in the next five overs (26 runs) but regained composure very well in the last five that saw 57 runs.
Sadat in his 78-minute stay hit four sixes and nine fours to give his team much needed win.
MSC were in discomfort all through the match especially in the second-half of their innings which was played under lights as wickets fell at regular intervals. Opener Mohammad Mithun started brightly in his cameo 9-ball 15 with two boundaries and one six. Barring Qaiser, only Tarek showed some guts with a 20-ball 14 not out. The rest of the story was a sorry sight as Mohammedan kept losing wickets.
SCORES IN BRIEF
TOP SPORTS: 158 for 4 in 20 overs (Sadat 91 not out, Riyad 30, Sanwar 19; Sanjamul 2-26, Nayyar 2-32)
MOHAMMEDAN: 125 all out in 18.3 overs (Qaiser 53, Mithun 15, Tarek 14, Al Mamun 10; Sunny 5-17, Lokuarachchi 2-15, Weeraratna 2-23)
Result: Top Sports won by 33 runs.
Man-of-the-match: Nazmus Sadat.

Thousands of cricket lovers thronged at Chittagong's MA Aziz Stadium yesterday after a four-year hiatus as the organisers of the much awaited 'Habib Group Port city Cricket League (PCL)' shook off the cobwebs in style.
After the last ODI against visiting Zimbabwe on January 26, 2005, the MA Aziz Stadium was allocated for football, starving the cricket fans of action since the Chittagong Divisional Stadium is located far from the town proper.
With the game scheduled to start at 2.30pm, the viewers started gathering at the match venue an hour and a half before that.
The organisers inaugurated the league through a remarkable colourful ceremony that included music, dance and drums. Dancers and singers performed traditional routines and numbers including a tribal special while eminent singer Tapan Chowdhury with the local Hoimanti Mal enthralled the audiences singing on a mobile boat (swampan).
Around ten thousand cricket fans present could find the sound of cricket again at the stadium in a performance that kept the elements at bay.
Hundreds of balloons were blown up by a strong wind from the stadium before releasing them to formally inaugurate the occasion.
And the first cricket match under the flood-light of the stadium was celebrated with a display of fire-works (Atash-baji) at the end of the match which also entertained the viewers much.
Satellite Television Channel ATN Bangla telecasted the match live.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Ministry Ahad Ali Sarker inaugurated the league while State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hasan Mahmud, Bangladesh Cricket Board Chairman Lt Gen Sina Ibne Jamali and high officials of Chittagong District Administration attended the ceremony among others.
