Top Sports Club of Noakhali strolled to an eight-wicket victory over Chittagong Mohammedan Sporting Club in the opening match of the Bashundhara PCL T20 Cup at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium yesterday.

Winning the toss, Top Sports skipper Shakib Al Hasan invited the opposition and succeeded in restricting the star-studded Mohammedan for most part of the innings. A few lusty blows from Mohammedan skipper Mohammad Ashraful and Sohrawardi Shuvo helped them put a modest total of 124 for the loss of seven wickets at the end of twenty overs.

A rollicking start from Pakistani recruit Taufiq Umar and Farhad Hossain meant Top Sports were always ahead of the chase. The left-hander Taufiq played a 39-ball 47 run knock while Farhad scored 21. Left-hander Shahriar Nafees and skipper Shakib Al Hasan accelerated the charge with 20 balls to spare and eight wickets in hand.

Nafees remained unbeaten on 39 and Shakib on 14. Umar was named man-of-the-match.

Earlier, a simple ceremony marked the inauguration of the second edition of the Port City league first time being held overseas. Satellite channel ATN Bangla is beaming all the matches of the weeklong tourney live from the venue.

PCL T20 Bashundhara Cup begins in Sharjah tomorrow Ctg Mohammedan takes on Top Sports Noakhali in opener

The port City League (PCL) Bashundhara Cup T20 begins here tomorrow (Sunday) with huge enthusiasm among the local fans with two matches slated for the opening day.

On the opening day, Chittagong Mohammedan SC will take on Top Sports Noakhali at 3 pm (local time) while Dhaka Sports Club meets Bangladesh Biman at 7 pm, after formal inauguration of the meet at 6:45 pm.

Private Satellite Channel ATN Bangla will telecast all the matches live.

Earlier, the league was scheduled to begin on March 26, but the organizers deferred the meet at the 11th hour due to visa problem of some players and officials involved with the league.

Addressing at a pre-match pres conference at Hotel Ramada on Saturday afternoon, Chittagong Mohammedan skipper Mohammad Ashraful said he hopes to regain his position in the national team showing a good performance in the PCL.

He said: “We’ve less playing experience in T20 matches… So, it is the right place for everyone to prove their ability in the PCL ahead of the T20 World Cup.”

The former national skipper said that in the last PCL they did not win any matches, but now they are very serious about each match.

He said his target in the PCL was to prove himself to make room in the national side ahead of the T20 World Cup in West Indies.

Mushfiqur Rahim, skipper of Pirates of Chittagong, was found quite optimistic about clinching the PCL title.

He said that his team is a balanced side with young and experienced players.

“We’ll try to win match by match,” he said. “We recruited Pakistani batsman with local dashing batsmen Aftab Ahmed and Alok Kapali.”

India’s Bangla Tigers captain Dip Dasgupta, who has previous experience of playing for Bangladesh, said: “I feel very glad to be participating in the PCL.”

He said his team consists of good batsmen, bowlers and all-rounders, and hoped about doing well in the tournament.

About Bangladesh cricket, Dasgupta said Bangladesh has made substantial improvement in cricket in the last two years.

Dhaka Sports Club captain Nazmul Hossain said their foreign collection is very strong and they would fight for the championship.

Chittagong Tigers captain Mahmudullah Riad said they have very good batting depth as well as some good bowlers and all-rounders.

“If we are able to play according to our ability, we must win the PCL crown,” he added.

Defending champions Brothers Union skipper Nafees Iqbal said they have a good collection of foreign players for the league.

“We missed the services of Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi for our team, but confirmed the services of former Pakistani all rounder Azhar Mahmood.”

Replying to a question, he said he is very pleased to be playing in the PCL on foreign soil and his team also played a practice match to have a feel of the ground.

Nafees, who considers his team as favorite in the league, is hopeful to regain the title playing good cricket.

Sharjah, Mar 27 (UNB) - Port City League (PCL) chairman AZM Nasiruddin said the image of the local Bangladeshi community will be brightened if the tournament succeeds here.

Addressing a press conference at the Ramada Hotel Saturday afternoon, he said they had to undergo some difficulty to have visa for the huge Bangladeshi contingent as the local authority was very cautious in issuing entry permits for their experience of some illegal immigrants among the Bangladeshi community here.

He said: “If we can make the tournament a success, then the image of the Bangladeshi community, who are working here, will brighten to a large extent.”

Nasir was taken by surprise seeing the huge interest for cricket among the local Bangladeshis, who despite two-day deferment of the league, crowded the Sharjah Stadium to see their beloved cricketers practice at the venue on Friday.

Asked if they would extend the time of the league as it did not begin in due time, he said they would sit with the participating teams Saturday evening to discuss the issue.

Nasir indicated that the tournament fixture might be rescheduled considering the players’ national duty ahead of the T20 World Cup and the T20 National League.

Replying to a question, he said they have received full cooperation of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in hosting the PCL in Sharjah. Some BCB high-ups also came here to watch the PCL.

The veteran organizer said some 10-12 MPs are now staying in Sharjah to attend the inauguration ceremony of the PCL on Sunday.

PCL general secretary Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir said BCB gave us logistic and umpiring support to host the tournament.

He said henceforth they would host the PCL tournament every year after the encouragement they received in the first version of the meet.

Local organizing committee chairman Iftekhar Hossain Babul and secretary Moeen Uddin Moeen were also present at the press conference.

Bangladeshi Port City Cricket League (PCL) has been deferred for two days due to the delay in getting visas for players and officials. The tournament was due to open today[Friday] at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium but most of the players, organisers and broadcasters did not receive the required visa of United Arab Emirates.

"Due to visa complications, the tournament will now start on March 28[Sunday] and finished on April 4," Sharjah Administrator Mazhar Khan told Cricdb

A total of eight teams, one from India, are scheduled to take part in the Twenty20 tournament, featuring several Pakistani players including Shoaib Malik, Rana Naved ul Hasan, Imran Nazir, Khurrum Manzoor, Faisal Iqbal, Hamayun Farhat, Nayyar Abbas, Yasir Hameed,

Azhar Mehmood, Wahab Riaz. “I was expected to leave today but unfortunately I didn't get visa in time,” said Riaz – who is signed to play for Chittagong Pirates.

“It would be great to see Pakistan players in action in Sharjah in the PCL league,” Khan said. “Sharjah has always been their second home and wish them all the success here.”

This year's PCL is the second edition of this tournament which attracted a huge response in Bangladesh last year however the league is being held away from the Bangladesh as the cricket grounds in Bangladesh are undergoing renovation for the ICC cricket World Cup matches to be held there next year.

The first three months of 2010 had the Tigers playing five Test matches and ten one-dayers against four different opponents in varying conditions at home and abroad.

As they board a flight to Sharjah to play in the Port City League, the national cricketers will have to make quick adjustments to their game as they prepare to play three Twenty20 tournaments in the space of forty days after two gruelling Test matches against England. The delayed PCL will now end on April 4 and seven days later the national cricketers will turn up for six different franchises in the newly designed National Cricket League Twenty20s.

The tournament was brought ahead of the NCL one-dayers since it would be a perfect tune-up for the national players ahead of the World Twenty20 Championships. The Tigers fly off to the West Indies on April 25, five days after the local tournament ends.

In the Caribbean, the Tigers play two first round matches against defending champions Pakistan (May 1) and Australia (May 5). Three weeks later, Bangladesh will turn up at Lord's to play the first of two Tests against England.

The muddled schedule is nothing new in international cricket but it will take a huge toll on the already overworked Tigers, who have pushed some of the Test matches this year into the fifth day. Add to that the shift in mindset between two modes of cricket and it makes for tough reading.

But according to chief selector Rafiqul Alam, it comes with the territory of playing top-level cricket.

"It is difficult to move from Twenty20s, ODIs and Tests but everybody is doing it. The international calendar was written up a while back and it is all about adjustment in international level," said Rafiqul.

He said the preparation for the World Twenty20s would be smooth with the Tigers playing the PCL and NCL. "The batsman will have no problem to play in the World Twenty20s as by then, they would have played enough Twenty20 games to make the necessary adjustments," said the former national cricketer.

But the real challenge would be to adjust from the Twenty20s to the Tests, that too in England. If the Tigers do not qualify to the Super 8s of the competition, they play two three-day matches against Hampshire and Essex and a four-day game against the England Lions.

It might get tricky if they qualify in the top eight but realistically, they have three weeks and three practice matches to prepare for a stern test.

Rafiqul believes the preparation that is scheduled would be enough for the Tigers. "We have three longer-version matches in England (before the Tests) and I think it will be good enough," he said.

With tricky times ahead, Bangladesh would dearly want their key players in the forefront. And the good news from the chief selector was the re-emergence of Mashrafe Bin Mortaza in the spotlight soon enough.

"The latest I have on Mashrafe is that he has been practicing hard for the Kolkata Knight Riders. He has full fitness now," informed Rafiqul.

Sharjah Cricket Council to Host Bangladesh Twenty20 League (Port City Cricket League 2010)

Twenty20 cricket revolutionised the game attracting huge spectator interest. Then came the Indian Premier League that swept the entire world off its feet. Now, UAE will be treated with an action packed eight-day cricketainment that promises to grip the spectators next month with the Bangladesh Twenty20 league  going global.
The Sharjah Cricket Council will play host to the second edition of the Bashundhara Port-City Cricket League (PCL) which will be held at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium from March 26 to April 2. The Chittagong Divisional Sports Association, based in the Bangladesh’s second biggest city, attracted huge sponsorship support after launching the event last year.

As the grounds in Bangladesh will not be available at the time as they are undergoing renovation ahead of their eight 2011 World Cup matches, they decided to move the event overseas and chose Sharjah as the venue. “The grounds are all occupied and getting ready for the 2011 World Cup. Hence Bangladesh Cricket Board and Chittagong Cricket Association decided to move out and try the same league at Sharjah,” said Sharjah Cricket Council General Secretary Mazhar Khan.

“Since there is a lot of Bangladeshi community here, the organisers feel that there will be a lot of crowd support for the event. We are closely working with the Chittagong Cricket Association to make it a big success,” he added.

A total of 15 matches will be played with two games every day and three on the final day, that includes the two semifinals and the final. There will be a lot of entertainment factor before the start and during every match. “They plan to have some entertainment going along through the event. They are likely to flow in a few artistes from Bangladesh to perform here,” Khan said. “There will be two matches per day under flood lights with the first match starting around 1630 or 1700 local time.”

Each team will consist of two to three Bangladesh national players and two international players followed by the top domestic players. “There is a possibility that Abdul Razzaq and a few Pakistani players will be participating,” Khan said.

The eight participating teams are Abahani Ltd, Brothers Union Chittagong, Dada Warriors, Dhaka Sports Tigers, Ispahani Sporting Club, Mohamedan Sporting Club, Pirates of Chittagong and Top Sports

The league has a huge fan following in Bangladesh and the tournament would be telecast live on ATN Bangla for the local viewers back home.

With such a huge responsibility on their back, the SCC want to provide the best and the Sharjah stadium is being braced up for the mega event. “We are trying to improve our facilities at the Sharjah Stadium so it’s an interesting eight-day event,” said Khan. “If they succeed and it’s financially viable to them they might continue in the future. They certainly are not coming in for just one time, but their intention is to take the league abroad and give the Bangladesh community something to enjoy.”

Khan felt that such tournaments would help the officials here understand the format and implement in the future to benefit cricket in the UAE. “Maybe we can also try to learn from these things and try to set up our own league in UAE. We can have about four to six franchises for a Twenty20 event.”

He added that such tournaments would make this game popular and boost the interest in UAE. “We have a few good grounds available in the UAE to hold these events. It definitely will flourish for many years to come. There are also talks about bringing other events to UAE and market it in the Gulf. There are lot of things happening.”

“Hopefully we should be having some exciting cricket in the days to come. That will help our domestic cricket too. The whole intention is to give our boys an opportunity to represent other teams and play for them, so this will be good for our cricketers,” said Khan, a veteran cricket administrator in UAE.

With the Sharjah Stadium making a bid to return to the international stage after hosting its 200th one-day match last week, Khan expressed optimism that it could be an attractive venue for the newest version of the game.

“By far we are the leaders in ODI in regard to hosting the highest number of matches now hopefully we will try to make a record in T20s as well as a venue. I hope that this will be the beginning of many more such tournaments. We are looking forward to such challenges and provide the best facilities to our visitors,” he said.

রাশেদুল তুষার, চট্টগ্রাম থেকে : পাকিস্তান জাতীয় দলের ক্রিকেটারদের অন্য টুর্নামেন্টে খেলার ব্যাপারে পিসিবির বাধ্যবাধকতায় কিছুটা বিপাকে পড়েছে পিসিএলের দলগুলো। আর মাত্র চার দিন পরই মরু শহর শারজায় শুরু হচ্ছে টুর্নামেন্ট। এ অবস্থায় দলগুলোকে আবার নতুন করে ভাবতে হচ্ছে বিদেশি কোটার খেলোয়াড় নিয়ে। অবশ্য এ কাজটি দ্রুত শেষ করেই মাঠের খেলায় নামার প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছে চট্টগ্রামের দলগুলো।
চট্টগ্রামের তিন শক্তিশালী দল মোহামেডান স্পোর্টিং ক্লাব, বর্তমান চ্যাম্পিয়ন ব্রাদার্স ইউনিয়ন ও চিটাগং টাইগার্স পড়েছে একই গ্রুপে। গ্রুপ 'এ'র অন্য দল নোয়াখালীর টপ স্পোর্টস। পাকিস্তানি খেলোয়াড়দের নিয়ে সবার দুশ্চিন্তা থাকলেও টপ স্পোর্টস ক্লাবের রানা নাভিদকে নিয়ে আর কোনো চিন্তা নেই। পাকিস্তান ক্রিকেট বোর্ড পিসিএলে অংশ নেওয়ার অনুমতি দিয়েছে তাঁকে। এবারের পিসিএলে বি গ্রুপে আছে ঢাকা স্পোর্টস ক্লাব, পাইরেটস অব চিটাগং, বাংলাদেশ বিমান ও একমাত্র বিদেশি দল বেঙ্গল টাইগার্স অব ইন্ডিয়া।
২৬ মার্চ থেকে শুরু হচ্ছে পিসিএল টি-টোয়েন্টি বসুন্ধরা কাপ। এরই মধ্যে পুরো দল সাজিয়ে ফেলেছে গতবারের চ্যাম্পিয়ন চট্টগ্রাম ব্রাদার্স ইউনিয়ন এবং চট্টগ্রাম মোহামেডান ক্লাব। তবে বিদেশি কোটা এখনো পূরণ করতে পারেনি পাইরেটস অব চিটাগং ও চিটাগং টাইগার্স। পিসিবির নতুন সিদ্ধান্ত বিপাকে ফেলেছে পাইরেটস অব চিটাগংকে। তাই দলের ম্যানেজার শহির আহমেদের কণ্ঠে ঝরেছে দুশ্চিন্তা, 'মোহাম্মদ হাফিজ এবং ইয়াসির আরাফাতকে আমরা কনফার্ম করে ফেলেছিলাম। এখন নতুন করে ইয়াসির হামিদকেও কনফার্ম করেছি।' পাইরেটস অব চিটাগং চতুর্থ বিদেশি খেলোয়াড়টি আনতে পারে অস্ট্রেলিয়া থেকে।
এই দলে আছেন জাতীয় দল ও লিগের ভালো পারফরমারদের বেশ কয়েকজন। জাতীয় দলের আফতাব আহমেদ, মুশফিকুর রহিম ছাড়াও আছেন এ মুহূর্তে জাতীয় দলের বাইরে থাকা অলক কাপালী ও ফরহাদ রেজা। এ ছাড়া জাতীয় লিগের খেলোয়াড় রনি তালুকদার, পেসার শুভাশিস, ইমন, স্পিনার আরাফাত সানি, জুবায়ের, অপুদের নিয়ে তাঁর দল শিরোপার জন্যই লড়বে বলে আশা করছেন শহির আহমেদ। গ্রুপের অন্য দলগুলো সম্পর্কে কোনো ধারণা নেই বলে মূল প্রতিপক্ষ কে হতে পারে সে সম্পর্কেও ধারণা নেই শহিরের। নিজের দল সম্পর্কে আরেকটা তথ্য জানাতে ভোলেননি তিনি, এবার কোচের দায়িত্বে থাকছেন আরিফ আহমেদ।
গতবারের চ্যাম্পিয়ন চট্টগ্রাম ব্রাদার্স ইউনিয়ন এবারও শক্তিশালী দল গড়েছে। শহীদ আফ্রিদিকে অনেকটা নিশ্চিত করলেও পাকিস্তান ক্রিকেট বোর্ডের নতুন বাধ্যবাধকতার কারণে ইমরান নাজির আর আজহার মেহমুদকেও চুক্তিবদ্ধ করেছে তারা। এ তথ্য জানা গেছে ব্রাদার্সের সভাপতি এবং পিসিএল চেয়ারম্যান আ জ ম নাছির উদ্দিনের কাছে। জাতীয় দলের ইমরুল কায়েস, জুনায়েদ সিদ্দিকী আর আবদুর রাজ্জাকের পাশাপাশি জাতীয় দলের বাইরে থাকা নাফিস ইকবাল, নাজিম উদ্দিন, তুষার ইমরানকে নিয়ে ব্যাটিং লাইন-আপটা তাদের বেশ ভালো। এ কারণে নিজের দলকে টুর্নামেন্টের অন্যতম সেরা বলেই দাবি নাছির উদ্দীনের। এ ছাড়া দলে আছেন জাতীয় লিগের মিলন ও শফিউল ইসলাম। এবার দলের লক্ষ্য সম্পর্কে কালের কণ্ঠকে প্রত্যাশিত কথাটাই বলেছেন তিনি, 'ডিফেন্ডিং চ্যাম্পিয়ন হিসেবে এবার শিরোপা ধরে রাখার বিকল্প কিছু আমরা ভাবছি না।' বর্তমান চ্যাম্পিয়নদের কোচ এবার এমদাদুল হক ইমদু।
এদিকে প্রথমবারের মতো পিসিএলে নাম লিখিয়েই বাকি দলগুলোকে চ্যালেঞ্জ জানাচ্ছে চিটাগং টাইগার্স। গতবার ম্যাচপ্রতি সর্বাধিক সাত লাখ ৬০ হাজার টাকা পাওয়া তামিম ইকবালকে দলে টেনেছে তারা। সর্বোচ্চ চার লাখ টাকা পারিশ্রমিকে জাতীয় দলের এই ওপেনারের পাশাপাশি ইনফর্ম মাহমুদুল্লাহ রিয়াদ, শামসুর রহমান শুভ, মিথুন আলী, এনামুল জুনিয়র, কামরুল ইসলাম, আরিফুল ইসলাম ও অনূর্ধ্ব-১৯ দলের আলাউদ্দিন বাবুকেও নিশ্চিত করেছে তারা। এই দলে বিদেশি কোটায় এখন পর্যন্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে শুধু পাকিস্তান দলের বাইরে থাকা খুররম মঞ্জুরকে। পাশাপাশি বিদেশি কোটায় দ্বিতীয় খেলোয়াড়ের জন্য জিম্বাবুয়ের এলটন চিগুম্বুরা এবং ভারতের রবীন্দ্র জাদেজার সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করা হচ্ছে বলে জানালেন দলের কর্মকর্তা মাসুদ আহমেদ। জাতীয় দলের সাবেক অধিনায়ক খালেদ মাহমুদ সুজনের প্রশিক্ষণে তাঁদের দল ভালো করবে বলেই আশা করছেন মাসুদ আহমেদ।
অন্য দলগুলো যেখানে দুজন বিদেশি খেলোয়াড় জোগাড় করতেই হিমশিম খাচ্ছে, সেখানে চট্টগ্রাম মোহামেডান ইতিমধ্যে নিশ্চিত করে বসে আছে তিন তিনজন বিদেশি খেলোয়াড়। পাকিস্তানের সাবেক অধিনায়ক শোয়েব মালিক ও নাইয়ার আব্বাসের পাশাপাশি অস্ট্রেলিয়ার রাজ্য দল ভিক্টোরিয়ার ব্যাটিং অলরাউন্ডার অ্যান্ড্রু ফ্লেজারকে দলভুক্ত করেছে তারা। ফ্রেজারের কাছে ভালো পারফরম্যান্সই আশা করছেন মোহামেডানের সাংগঠনিক সম্পাদক ও পিসিএল কমিটির সহ-সভাপতি আলী আব্বাস, 'অ্যান্ড্রু ফ্লেজার মূলত টোয়েন্টি-টোয়েন্টি স্পেশালিস্ট। সীমিত ওভারের এই খেলায় তার স্ট্রাইক রেট দেড় শর ওপরে। ওর এখানে ভালোই করার কথা।'
এর বাইরে মোহামেডান দলে থাকছেন মোহাম্মদ আশরাফুল, নাঈম ইসলাম, সোহরাওয়ার্দী শুভ, ডলার মাহমুদ, ফয়সাল হোসেন ডিকেন্স, হান্নান সরকার, আরাফাত সালাউদ্দিন, শরিফুল্লাহ ও আরমান হোসেন। আলী আব্বাস জানালেন, তাঁর দলও শিরোপার জন্য লড়বে, 'মোহামেডান দল গড়ে চ্যাম্পিয়ন হওয়ার জন্য। এবারও এর ব্যতিক্রম হয়নি। আমরা চ্যাম্পিয়ন হওয়ার জন্যই খেলব।'

এর বাইরে মোহামেডান দলে থাকছেন মোহাম্মদ আশরাফুল, নাঈম ইসলাম, সোহরাওয়ার্দী শুভ, ডলার মাহমুদ, ফয়সাল হোসেন ডিকেন্স, হান্নান সরকার, আরাফাত সালাউদ্দিন, শরিফুল্লাহ ও আরমান হোসেন। আলী আব্বাস জানালেন, তাঁর দলও শিরোপার জন্য লড়বে, 'মোহামেডান দল গড়ে চ্যাম্পিয়ন হওয়ার জন্য। এবারও এর ব্যতিক্রম হয়নি। আমরা চ্যাম্পিয়ন হওয়ার জন্যই খেলব।'

Hafeez to play for Bangladeshi T20 team in Sharjah

Pakistani all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez will be seen in action during Bangladesh's T20 championship, the Port City League (PCL), scheduled to held in Sharjah later this year.

Hafeez will be playing for the Tigers, and will join fellow national team-mates Rana Naved, Imran Nazir, Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq amongst many others, who have been signed by different teams in the championship.

The Chittagong District Sports Association had inaugurated the PCL with eight teams in May 2009.

The tournament will see the participation of Chittagong Abahani, Chittagong Mohammedan, Chittagong Brothers Union, Chittagong Port and teams sponsored by four corporate houses: Ispahani Tea, Elite Paint, Partex and Gazi Tank. (ANI)
